Thirsty? Drink Amherstburg!

Amherstburg is quickly becoming the hip, hot (and cold) drink mecca of Essex County! When you come to the county and specifically make your way to Amherstburg, you will find no shortage of groovy and unique establishments to hang out with your friends. In addition to the great pub or picnic-style savoury foods, you’ll be able to taste locally crafted beer, wine and spirits poured right from the source!

Starting at the most northern end of Amherstburg, check out Wolfhead Distillery. A craftsman’s operation neighboured by the Amherstburg quarry, Wolfhead incorporates the resources (such as limestone) found in its own backyard in the production of unique flavours that push the boundaries of standard Canadian Spirits. Be sure to sample Wolfhead’s award-winning coffee whisky liquor and/or apple caramel whisky, all while viewing the distilling process from its massive, showcased operations room. Foodies will appreciate an array of delicious food as well, ranging from apps and entrees to charcuterie and desserts. Located at 7781 Howard Avenue.

Head southbound to the majestic Sprucewood Shores Estate Winery. Situated along the shore of Lake Erie, Sprucewood’s beautiful setting is rivalled only by its exceptional wines! Looking for a romantic afternoon or a memorable day with friends? Take one of the winery’s famous picnic baskets to the beach or sit on its balcony while enjoying a glass of fresh Unoaked Chardonnay or light, fresh Pinot Grigio. Located at 7258 County Road 50 W.

On your way into town, don’t miss Vivace Winery. Vivace’s mature grape vines are enriched and enhanced by the area’s viniculture climate, producing outstanding VQA wines. Aptly situated on a sweet, farm like setting, you may be greeted by the winery’s friendly house goat before you begin sipping on crowd favorites such as the red Sonatina or the lovely, crisp Brillante Rose. Just don’t leave until you’ve sampled the world-renowned ice wine from this region, including the Dolce Vita label – which makes a beautiful gift for any occasion! Located at 5141 Concession Road 5N.

Next on your stop, in a country setting, should be Sanson Estate Winery where you can sample Bird Dog Red – voted best Baco Noir in Canada. Paired with the winery’s supply of natural meats and produce, Sanson Estate offers a true “local” and tasty experience for those who seek it. Located at 9238 Walker Rd. – call ahead for tasting hours.

Amherstburg’s newest winery is Dancing Swallows. And where did the name, “Dancing Swallows”, come from? When the owners were out working in the fields, they looked up and there were the swallows, having fun diving and swooping and chasing each other. They started serving as a reminder that the whole purpose was to produce wines to enjoy, and that you have to take a step back from all the technical details, and be like the dancing swallows – just have some fun. The “fun” in doing what they love is reflected in every sip! Located at 8704 Essex Road 9 – call ahead for tasting hours.

Right next to door, located at 8728 Howard Avenue (Essex Rd 9), is one of Amherstburg’s awesome Breweries. GL Heritage is a family owned and operated Brewery. With indoor and outdoor seating for tastings and more. The atmosphere there cannot be beat. They also provide an easy ordering service directly on their website.
