Today Amherstburg is one of Ontario’s great small towns, but greatness doesn’t happen on its own. Nature, history, and human actions always play a part. Amherstburg’s location right beside the Detroit River originally made it an important place and adds to its beauty to this day. From the War of 1812, to Freedom seekers escaping slavery in the United States, and Rum Running – history has left its mark! But so have the creativity, hard work, and enthusiasm of its residents.
During 2026 we are going to shine a light on what we think makes Amherstburg great. Our hope is that this new series helps you get to know the town better, support its many businesses and attractions, and become a strong, positive champion of the town. Look for our first story in our next Buzz.

There are approximately 5100 communities across Canada. Approximately only 130 small communities have radio stations, and only 750 have community newspapers, many of which are only available online. How many communities do you think have both like Amherstburg? Very, very few!
The River Town Times was established in 1995 and covers local news, sports, and community events. In 2023, local residents Ron Giofu (everyone knows Ron), Laura, and Dominic D’Alessandro purchased the paper.
CKBG – the Burg 107.9 is also dedicated to local community news, music, and supporting musicians. It went on air July 3rd in 2023. Owning his own radio station was a life’s ambition of the late Marty Adler, and launching CKBG fulfilled a lifelong dream. Today the torch has been passed to his son Greg.
WMAG chose today as the time to shine a light on RTT and CKBG because they share birthday dates. So happy birthday to both of them.
Having BOTH an independent radio station and a local newspaper in our small community is pretty special. They are both perfect examples of what makes Amherstburg great! So if you enjoy their coverage, please tune in and also pick up a paper.
Tune in every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday / Sunday at 8AM, to catch Nate Carr and Richard Peddie talking all about What Makes Amherstburg Great!
