Fort Malden National Historic Site in Amherstburg is now open for the season.
For the 2025 operational season, the gates at Fort Malden National Historic Site will be closed during the Fort’s hours of operation, which are May and June, Wednesday to Sunday, from 10:00am to 5:00pm and July and August, daily from 10:00am to 5:00pm, with reduced hours after Labour day.
With the Ford government increasingly pressuring municipalities to speed up and expand development to help address Ontario’s housing crisis, the Town of Amherstburg has taken a big political step to protect its historic charm.
The entire downtown core – including more than 100 historic ‘properties of interest’ – should be designated a heritage conservation district, a municipal council committee is recommending.
Amherstburg once again has an official town crier. On Monday night, town council appointed Norm Ross to the role that was left vacant in 2019 following Frank Gorham’s retirement. The town crier serves as a ceremonial ambassador, representing Amherstburg at municipal functions, historical commemorations, and potentially at regional competitions.
