A look at Amherstburg’s new hotel

A new boutique hotel is just weeks away from opening in downtown Amherstburg. Hotel STRY began taking bookings earlier this month and will open to guests beginning in October.
“As soon as we started this project, the walls started to talk to us in terms of what they needed, what they wanted and what they could become,” said owner, Lauri Brouyette.
A weekend for the arts in Amherstburg. ART by the RIVER, which is held annually the weekend before Labour Day weekend, is the major fundraiser for the Gibson Gallery.
The Arts and Crafts Festival, which was first held in 1967, is Essex County’s original Arts and Crafts Show which has grown into an end of summer tradition in Amherstburg, attracting 170 artists and artisans from across Ontario.
There are so many reasons to visit Windsor and Essex County. Many locals will call attention to the incredible local pizza style, the warm weather, and the stunning Art Deco view of the Detroit skyline â but Windsor Essex is also rich in history.
From military battles, to rum-running; from the Underground Railroad, to the creation of a world-class distillery, there is always something new to learn in the Southernmost county in Canada.
It is paradise for mountain bikers.
More than 800 yards of dirt and 1,000 recorded volunteers hours later, a local non-profit cycling group will introduce the second phase of a biking trail network in Amherstburg on Saturday, along with a new program to teach youth basic riding skills.
The work of North Star High School art students is on display during Open Air Weekends.
Two classes, guided by teachers Samantha Thomas and Andrea Craig-Wammes, helped create the signage with the signs being posted on four posts that were also painted by the students. The signs guide people to businesses and sites in or near the Open Air footprint.
There is a Grade 10 class that participated as well as a Grade 11 class. They add up to approximately 45 students in total.
Downtown Amherstburg was buzzing with visitors enjoying food, kids games, tours and more on the first Open Air Weekend of the year.
“It’s my first time so I didn’t really know what to expect,” said LaSalle resident Julie Rossi, as she noshed on an acai bowl. “There’s a lot more things to do and variety than I thought there would be. “We’re just going to wander in and out of some of the shops,” added Patti Weir, who was on a return visit to the town’s Open Air Weekend festivities.
Amherstburg is showcasing the completion and transformation of the former Edgewater sanitary lagoon system into a vibrant wetland ecosystem now called Golfview Park, Wetlands & Trails.
Officials said the area near Golfview Drive and Linwood Street will provide residents with enhanced recreational opportunities and foster biodiversity in the region.

Nestled in the heart of Amherstburg, Hotel STRY (pronounced Story, like a book) will open at a landmark building at 70 Murray Street that has been restored to its former glory.
Amherstburg and a couple businesses in town have been recognized for four events by the ‘Best of Windsor-Essex’ awards from Tourism Windsor-Essex Pelee Island (TWEPI).
According to a release from the town, “These victories underscore Amherstburg’s charm and excellence in various categories, showcasing its appeal as a premier destination in the region.”
