Christ Church at 317 Ramsay is the oldest continuously used church in Amherstburg. It's also one of the most fascinating places in town with its 1812 history, with a graveyard and beautiful stained glass windows. It's led by the very energetic Reverend Lisa Poultney, the Rector in Amherstburg and also at Christ Church, 25 km away in Colchester.

In 1875, a massive fire burned down 14 businesses on Murray Street. As a result, the new replacement structures on the block, west of Ramsay, were constructed in fire-resistant brick. Today, that small block is rich in heritage buildings made of Amherstburg's typical red brick, waiting to be beautifully restored.

An estimated 30,000 to 40,000 Freedom Seekers and fugitive slaves reached Canada via the Underground Railroad before the American Civil War. Travelling hundreds of miles, they took extreme risks to seek their freedom from American slavery. A secret network of abolitionists, free Blacks, and First Nations created an important part of the Underground Railroad around Amherstburg, Windsor, and Chatham. For some, their place of refuge was the Nazrey African Methodist Episcopal Church.
