What Makes Amherstburg Great: The House Youth Centre

Today Amherstburg is one of Ontario’s great small towns, but greatness doesn’t happen on its own. Nature, history, and human actions always play a part. Amherstburg’s location right beside the Detroit River originally made it an important place and adds to its beauty to this day. From the War of 1812, to Freedom seekers escaping slavery in the United States, and Rum Running – history has left its mark! But so have the creativity, hard work, and enthusiasm of its residents.
During 2026 we are going to shine a light on what we think makes Amherstburg great. Our hope is that this new series helps you get to know the town better, support its many businesses and attractions, and become a strong, positive champion of the town. Look for our first story in our next Buzz.

HELPING KIDS SINCE 1971
Times can be challenging for today’s youth. Mental health pressures, academic competition, financial instability – all exacerbated by technology and addiction to social media. Plus all the craziness going on in the world today! For over 50 years, The House Youth Centre, located in The Hub at 320 Richmond, has had success helping hundreds and hundreds of Amherstburg youth navigate into adulthood and become tomorrow’s leaders. Its values are acceptance, peer leadership, potential, and community partnerships. These values drive a robust line-up of events:
- peer mentoring program (grades 9-12)
- embrace (2SLGBTQIA+) group
- senior + alumni group (ages 18 and up)
- drop-in counselling (ages 12-25)
WHAT MAKES AMHERSTBURG GREAT: THE HOUSE YOUTH CENTRE
Interesting fact: when Morghan Shearon was a teen, she attended The House events. After graduating with a Bachelor of Social Work degree, she is now its long-running Program Director.
Important volunteer organizations like The House are definitely another example of What Makes Amherstburg Great!
